Methodical Coffee is a relatively new roaster from Greenville, South Carolina. But don’t be fooled, Will Shurtz, Methodical’s Head of Coffee, has been around coffee his entire life. When a few of his friends decided they wanted to open a roaster, they went to him first for his coffee knowledge. He decided to join the business and the rest is history.

Greenville has a population of only around 70,000. Born and raised in Greenville, Will brings that small-town feeling to how he buys coffee, with his largest importer having only 8 employees. One of the biggest challenges facing new roasters is the amount of time and man-power it takes to figure out producer relationships. Methodical decided they would only work with smaller importers that already have relationships in the regions they want to buy coffee. While Methodical isn’t able to visit all their producers every year, they make up for that by meeting virtually or even inviting them to South Carolina! The steps they take to ensure their producers are taken care of is impressive.

Like all of our roasters, Methodical Coffee invests in their own local communities. They are always looking for new nonprofits to donate to. They also invest heavily in their employees. Will Shurtz started as a barista in high school and now wants to help others reach their goals in the industry. They meet monthly with their employees to see what their goals are – at Methodical or elsewhere – and figure out what they can do together to make those goals happen.
