Many roasters are surprised (our favorite roasters are pleasantly surprised) when we ask how they invest locally – their community and their workers. Red Rooster, from Floyd, VA, places the importance of impact on their employees as high as their impact on farmers and the environment. It’s no surprise they are the only roaster in the world with an on-site day care facility for their employees! One of their missions as a company is to provide “a livelihood and a fulfilling working life for our employees.” In addition to their employees, they also invest in local charities and contribute to fundraisers with the goal of being a social and economic anchor in their small, rural community of around 500 people.

Like all of our roasters, quality of coffee is another priority for Red Rooster. They boast that they roast to bring out the best of a coffee’s potential while emphasizing coffee quality and customer satisfaction. It hasn’t gone unnoticed; they’ve received 3 Good Food awards and are often featured in Coffee Review’s top 30 coffees while also having over 40 coffees scoring 90+.

Red Rooster pays high premiums for their coffee to help support their producers. They also create social programs to assist the producer’s communities. Even when going through importers instead of direct to farmers, they find importers in the country of origin to ensure the money stays in-country.

Their work to create a sustainable company starts with their coffee bags. They use biodegradable coffee bags that are hand printed locally in water-based inks. They only use compostable to-go products at their locations and also work with local farms to compost what they can from their operations. They recycle and reuse within their own company as often as they can.
